In this series we present two uncommon cases of extracranial meningioma extending into the infratemporal fossa (ITF). One patient presented as left sided facial pain and cheek swelling and another patient as swelling outer to the lateral canthus of eye, of 2 years’ duration each. Both the cases had foramina or fissural extensions. Detection of possible intracranial extension and involvement of adjacent structures is mandatory before surgery. The close proximity of the infratemporal area to the intracranial structures, the orbit, the paranasal sinuses, the nasopharynx, and the facial area demands careful planning of surgical excision and combined procedures.

Combined simultaneous transcranial and endoscopic endonasal resection of sphenoorbital meningioma extending into the sphenoid sinus, pterygopalatine fossa, and infratemporal fossa
BACKGROUND Sphenoorbital meningiomas are surgically challenging because of their nature to extend to adjacent structures. Here, we describe a case of recurrent sphenoorbital meningioma extending into the sphenoid sinus, pterygopalatine fossa, and infratemporal fossa, which was resected using combined simultaneous transcranial and endoscopic endonasal approaches. CASE DESCRIPTION A 62-year-old...
متن کاملLarge trigeminal schwannoma of the infratemporal fossa: evaluation of neoangiogenesis in this rare neoplasm.
BACKGROUND Trigeminal schwannomas are uncommon intracranial tumors. Extracranial trigeminal schwannomas in the infratemporal fossa are rare. METHODS We present a case with a clinical history of facial pain. MRI and CT scans showed a mass arising from the infratemporal fossa extending into the intracranial space. RESULTS We performed a combined neurosurgical and maxillofacial approach with p...
متن کاملPrimary Extracranial Meningioma Presenting as a Cheek Mass
Meningioma is well known as common disease of the central nervous system, whereas primary extracranial meningioma is rare, representing 1% to 2% of all meningiomas. We have experienced a case of primary extracranial meningioma presenting as a right cheek mass. The tumor was completely excised via a right lateral rhinotomy incision. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of primary ...
متن کاملPrimary Malignant Cerebellopontine Angle Melanoma Presenting as a Presumed Meningioma: Case Report and Review of the Literature.
Primary intracranial melanomas are rare, especially in the primary cerebellopontine angle. We describe a patient with a presumed jugular foramen meningioma that was found to be of melanotic origin at surgery. We followed this 26-year-old woman with mild ataxia with serial imaging for 18 months after the initial discovery of a cerebellopontine angle extra-axial mass. She developed worsening symp...

Background & Objective: Parapharyngeal and infratemporal masses are rare head and neck tumors that constitute about 0.5% of all of them. To assess the distribution of infratemporal and parapharyngeal masses, this study was carried out in ENT department of Hazrat Rasoul Hospital as a sample of Iranian population. Method: In this retrospective study, we evaluated parapharyngeal and infratemp...
